Avicii’s ‘Wake Me Up’ reaches two billion streams on Spotify

Avicii’s ‘Wake Me Up’ has reached two billion streams on Spotify, a decade after its release.

The track, released by the late producer in 2013 and featuring vocals from Aloe Blacc, joins a list of only 40 songs in history to pass the milestone.

The news was reported by Spotify’s CEO, Daniel Ek, on X: “Some big news today. ‘Wake Me Up’ by Avicii is the first song by a Swedish artist to break 2B streams on Spotify. It’s so amazing to see Avicii’s influence and remarkable work continuing to bring joy to so many around the world.”

Earlier this summer, ‘Wake Me Up’ was certified with diamond status after becoming the highest-performing dance single in history, with 10 million certified copies sold. “Tim’s energy and effort in producing my vocal performance and other instrumentation really shows the passion he had for creating,” said Aloe Blacc of the accolade.

‘Wake Me Up’ was initially met with mixed responses due to its “unexpected blend of genres,” but went on to become the highest charting dance track of the 2010’s. It remains the late artist and producer’s leading single to date, garnering more than 1 million daily streams worldwide on Spotify.

Avicii, real name Tim Bergling, died by suicide in April 2018 at the age of 28. A new documentary reflecting on his incredible life and career is currently in the works from Academy Award-winning producer, Lawrence Bender.
