DJ Minx relaunches Women On Wax with compilation of queer North American dance music
“Women On Wax Recordings has been dormant for a bit, but she's baaaack!”
Detroit house and techno legend DJ Minx has relaunched her Women On Wax label with a new Pride compilation, ‘Queendom Vol. 1’. Listen to the compilation below.
Out today (23rd June), the six-tracker celebrates “vastly underrated & underappreciated artists” in queer North American dance music, and features appearances from Shaun J. Wright, Nita Aviance, Sydney Blu, DJ Cent, and Debbie Graham, alongside DJ Minx herself.
The release is described as being “infused with the loving, upbeat, positive energy that Pride Month generates”, and aims to “refocus the vision of what Women On Wax set out to do when it originally launched over 20 years ago.”
Speaking on the label’s revival, Minx said: “Women On Wax Recordings has been dormant for a bit, but she’s baaaack! We've sorted some music from a few of my dopest friends to present to you for Pride 2023. Queendom, Volume One, is a compilation of tracks produced with love by 5 adorable LGBTQ+ artists. We’re so happy to be back!”
Minx, who came out publicly in 2021, originally founded Women On Wax in 1996 as a collective and mentorship platform for women DJs and singers from Detroit. Five years later, and with guidance from fellow Detroit artist Moodyman, the eponymous label was born with the goal to amplify local and global talent rooted in the legacy of the city’s music. She was also profiled in a 2021 cover interview with DJ Mag North America in which she discussed receiving long overdue flowers after years of flying under the radar.
This summer, Minx is set to perform at a host of international dance hotspots, including Defected Croatia, Hï Ibiza, Berlin’s Panorama Bar, and Eastern Electrics in London.
