Fresh Kicks 66: Sherelle
Reprezent Radio's footwork aficionado goes ham...
Sherelle joins our Fresh Kicks mix series with an hour of 160 madness!
The South Londoner is coming up fast in the capital thanks to her Tuesday night show on Reprezent radio, through which she spotlights key artists across the full range of the 160bpm spectrum.
A veritable goldmine of killer tunes, a listen through her own mixes reveals a keen ear for vocal-led tracks — whether it be footwork reworks or uplifting hardcore-tinged numbers — and a love for jittering junglistic breaks.
Sherelle's on-the-ball selections and technical skills have already seen her support the likes of footworkers DJ Paypal and TASO, drum & bass legend Dillinja at Kode9's experimental clubnight, Ø, and even The Prodigy.
A true digger, her Fresh Kicks set includes cuts from Om Unit, Sam Binga, DJ Earl, Slick Shoota, DJ Diamond, the late, great DJ Rashad, jungle classics from Origin Unknown and Omni Trio/Foul Play, and even a happy hardcore remix of Sophie!
Check it out in full at the bottom of the page and make sure your Tuesday nights are free from now on!
Last album you listened to in full?
"'Fantasea' Azealia Banks."
Last film you watched?
"Roxanne Roxanne, it’s a film about one of the first female lyricist Roxanne Shante. She had a hard life but still rose above everything. She my hero now."
Last DJ that blew your mind?
"Fauzia, a fellow footwork/160 DJ. We recently played the ICA for Resident Advisor and she shut it down with the maddest blends imaginable."
Favourite track of the year so far?
"My favourite track of the year so far is EQ Why 'EQ Is Gonna Give It’. I was sent an early version of this track last year and I have been in love with it ever since. EQ Why is a very bless guy and really represents the sounds of Chicago footwork."
Favourite producer?
"DJ Rashad obviously... Close favourites of mine are DJ Roc, DJ Nate, DJ Diamond, Kush Jones and Swisha. And first loves Machinedrum and Tom & Jerry (4 Hero). Anything these guys produce demands attention."
Favourite place you've visited?
"Riga, Latvia."
What record is top of your wishlist?
"The original version of 'Finest Illusion' by Foul Play, I have been obsessed with that song ever since I played GTA Liberty City."
What's the best club you've played at?
"Corsica [Studios], going on after Dillinja was a very unreal experience as well."
What's your proudest moment as an DJ?
"Supporting The Prodigy alongside one of my best mates from Reprezent Radio, NAINA. Seeing a sold out crowd react so well to footwork, jungle, 160 at the fucking Brixton Academy was unreal. We were buzzing after and drank all the alcohol dry in our dressing room."
Tell us a joke...
"Arsenal Fan TV."
