Gangsta Boo, former Three 6 Mafia rapper, dies, aged 43

US rapper Gangsta Boo, formerly of Three 6 Mafia, has died at age 43.

Family of the Memphis artist, real name Lola Chantrelle Mitchell, confirmed her death in a statement, Pitchfork reports. "The Mitchell family would like to thank everyone for their condolences regarding the untimely death of Lola ‘Gangsta Boo’ Mitchell," the family said. "The family is asking for your continued prayers and privacy as we process the loss of our loved one." No cause of death was given.

Credited with pioneering female Southern rap, Gangsta Boo joined Three 6 Mafia in the mid-'90s at 15 years old, appearing on the Memphis group's debut album, 1995's 'Mystic Stylez'. She continued to record with Three 6 Mafia until 2001. Mitchell also began releasing as a solo artist during that time, with her debut album 'Enquiring Minds' landing in 1998. That LP featured her biggest solo hit 'Where Dem Dollas At?', featuring Juicy J and DJ Paul.

More recently, she frequently worked with a wide range of artists, like Run The Jewels, Junglepussy, Blood Orange, Latto, Yelawolf, Clipping and Gucci Mane. In an interview with Billboard just last month, Gangsta Boo discussed her "return", the breadth of her influence on hip-hop and a new project she was working on called 'The BooPrint', which she hoped to release in the first months of 2023.
