King Britt announces Blacktronika: Afrofuturism in Electronic Music exhibit
It's based on his acclaimed university course, which honours people of colour who have pioneered groundbreaking genres within electronic music
King Britt has announced details of a new exhibit based on his music-based university course, Blacktronika: Afrofuturism in Electronic Music.
The acclaimed educator, producer, musician, DJ and engineer will bring the exhibit to The Nest at Geisel Library at University of California (UC), San Diego from 6th February to 25th March.
Researching and honouring people of colour who have pioneered groundbreaking genres within the electronic music landscape, Britt's course is available to all UCSD students, and looks at "the lineage of many of the groundbreaking Black, electronic artists who have been integral but overlooked in the development and commodification of house, techno, drum & bass and experimental music," he said.
Central to the exhibit will be a closer look of course materials, a selection of vintage and current electronica instruments-of-interest, and ephemera associated with Britt’s career and his current research.
On 3rd March, UC San Diego's Conrad Prebys Music Center Experimental Theater will also host the Blacktronika: Club Experience pop-up. An in-person extension of the main exhibit, it honours "all the innovators of colour that contribute to the advancement of electronic music. Chicago & NY House, Detroit Techno, Jamaican Dub, Funk, Disco, Hip Hop, Amapiano and more are all rooted in Black music".
