Premiere: Design Default ‘S.E.E.D.S’

Mexico City’s Infinite Machine label celebrates its 100th release next week with the release of Design Default’s ‘Quartz Silica’ EP. Listen to ‘S.E.E.D.S’ below. 

The Parisian producer’s debut five-tracker for the label sits comfortably in its expansive catalogue of sci-fi-influenced club experiments, pulling particular inspiration from dystopian anime films such as Trigun & Neon Genesis Evangelion. Describing himself as a “tone scientist”, he creates propulsive, pointilst rhythms using a mixture of organic and synthetic drums. Industrial beats charge in unpredictable directions, collapsing into chaotic flurries of distortion before rebuilding themselves with firm dancefloor drive. 

The steady percussion of ‘S.E.E.D.S’ gives way to dizzying electronic glitches, zaps and samples, before a melody flashes into the mix like sparks from a machine in overdrive. The track also gets a remix from fellow Parisian De Grandi, who harnesses that melody into something decidedly more euphoric, with a wobbly bass throb thrown in for good measure.
