Prince to be honoured with major road name in Minneapolis

A major road in Minneapolis will be renamed in honour of late local hero Prince. 

The Minnesota State Senate voted 55-5 in favour of changing the name of the highway that runs past Prince's Paisley Park estate, production complex, concert venue and museum, AP reports. The bill will progress to Minnesota governor Tim Walz to give the final sign off.

The Prince Rogers Nelson Memorial Highway will take over a seven-mile stretch of Minnesota State Highway 5, which runs through the state capital's suburbs of Chanhassen and Eden Prairie. State Senator Julia Coleman said Prince's family and friends would fund the new signage. 

"Prince was a true genius, a visionary artist who pushed the boundaries of music and cultures in ways that will never be forgotten," Coleman said in Senate. "His influence can be heard in the work of countless musicians who came after him, and his legacy continues to inspire new generations of artists to this day."

Celebration, the annual Prince tribute at Paisley Park, is set for next month, 8th June through the 11th. This year's edition will showcase previously unreleased music from Prince's famed "vault", according to NME. The line-up features DJ D-Nice, Stokley, Sounds of Blackness, The Steeles and Prince's band NPG, plus appearances by Chaka Khan, Chuck D and Doug E. Fresh.
