Prince's toxicology report shows “a pretty clear smoking gun”, according to Associated Press, which obtained a copy of the document. 

Several experts have stated that the records show "exceedingly high" levels of the drug fentanyl in the icon's blood and organs, far more than would be present in the body of a patient suffering from chronic pain who had been legally prescribed medical patches containing the substance. 

Fentanyl has been linked to thousands of deaths in the US, and is increasingly used as a heroin substitute. It is up to 100 times more powerful than morphine, with just 3-milligrams per litre of blood enough to kill an average-sized adult male. Prince, who has a posthumous body of work slated for release soon and ranks as one of our all-time favourite artists, had 67.8-milligrams per litre in his blood, and 450-micrograms per kilogram in his liver— anything over 69-micrograms is considered a case of potentially fatal overdose.
