Run DMC’s Jam Master Jay murder trial scheduled for September
It comes 18 months after two men were charged with the 2002 killing of the New York DJ
The murder trial of Run-DMC's Jam Master Jay has been scheduled for September.
18 months on from two men being charged with the 2002 killing of the iconic DJ, AllHipHop reports that Karl “Lil D” Jordan and Ronald “Tinard” Washington will be brought to trial for the murder on 22nd September.
With opening statements and testimony on 26th September, a backup trial date of 23rd February 2023 has been set in case of scheduling complications to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
Washington is currently serving a federal prison sentence for robbery, and Jordan was taken into custody in August 2020. “They shot him in cold blood,” said Seth DuCharme, the US attorney for the Eastern District of New York, at the time.
“Our office along with our federal partners and the NYPD started working that case in the early 2000s, very soon after the murder and there were a lot of challenges that we faced right away. It was important to us then and it remains extremely to us now to bring justice to the victim, his family and his friends and the community that cared so much about those events.”
Jam Master Jay, real name Jason William Mizell, was fatally shot in New York City in a recording studio on Merrick Boulevard in Jamaica, Queens on 30th October 2002. He was 37-years-old. As one-third of the group alongside Joseph "Run" Simmons and Darryl "D.M.C." McDaniels, Mizell helped Run-DMC become one of the most successful and influential hip-hop acts of the 1980s.
