Stormzy signs deal for joint ownership of AFC Croydon
He's set to buy his childhood hometown football club
Stormzy is on course to complete a deal to buy AFC Croydon.
The rapper has agreed a deal with footballer Wilfried Zaha to acquire the non-league club, which is based in the south London borough the pair both grew up in. Danny Young, ex-head of player care for Crystal Palace FC, is also part of the consortium to buy the club's assets.
AFC Croydon was founded in 2012 after Croydon Athletic folded. It competes in the ninth tier of English football.
A statement about the new agreement, which is yet to be completed, reads: “The consortium will own, operate and develop their childhood hometown football club.
“Whilst completion is subject to legislative and governance procedures, the three consortium members are excited about developing a community asset in the borough that gave them their own opportunities. They hope to take the entire community on this exciting journey with them.”
Stormzy was born in Croydon and is a Manchester United supporter. He participated recently in the 2023 edition of Soccer Aid as the manager of the England team.
Zaha began his footballing career at Crystal Palace before joining Manchester United in 2013. The following year he made the move to rejoin Palace on a season loan that was later made permanent in 2015.
Meanwhile, earlier this month Stormzy shared new single, ‘Toxic Trait’, featuring Fredo and produced by Santan (aka Dave) and revealed that he's working on more new music.
