Flyers from New York’s ‘90s queer scene documented in new book, Getting In
The David Kennerley-compiled book features over 200 flyers from legendary NYC queer parties like Purgatory and Lick It!
A new book showcasing club flyers from New York’s ‘90s queer scene is set to be released by Daken Press.
Getting In (available to pre-order now) features 230 flyers compiled by journalist and Gay City News reporter David Kennerley, who collected them from promoters, now-closed gay shops and bars, and club mailing lists throughout the nineties.
The book spotlights the most “eye-popping, culturally resonant examples from his collection”, and features flyers from nights at legendary NYC clubs such as the Roxy, Twilo, Tunnel and Copacabana, as well as parties such as Purgatory and Lick It!
Getting In includes a foreword by nightlife columnist Michael Musto alongside commentary from cultural luminaries of the era, including drag artists Lady Bunny and Linda Simpson, DJs Larry Tee, Max Rodriguez, and Susan Morabito, and Club Kids Goldy Loxx and Ernie Glam.
It’s the first of its kind to showcase queer nightclub invites from this era, and was described by Kennerley in a recent interview with The New York Times, as an act of “queer music history preservation.”
“We weren’t all snapping pictures at clubs back then, so we don’t have much of a visual record,” Kennerley said. “These provide some sort of visual evidence of what went on.”
