Jayda G releases new album, 'Guy', on Ninja Tune: Listen
It takes in elements of house, disco, soul and R&B
Jayda G's new album, 'Guy', is out today (Friday, 9th June).
Released through Ninja Tune and originally announced in February, it marks the Canadian artist's second full-length record for the label, after 2019's 'Significant Changes'. The record was co-produced with UK artist Jack Peñate, and also features contributions from Ibeyi's Lisa-Kaindé Diaz, among others.
'Guy' takes its name from Jayda G's late father, William Richard Guy. Speaking about this in her recent DJ Mag cover feature, she said: "My father wanted something better for himself, and so looking back at his life, understanding the position I’m in because of those really conscious decisions he made, is a big theme."
“The main theme of the album is, you have a choice,” she added. “Shitty things happen in life — I’m not trying to negate that, shit is hard — but you have a choice of how that’s going to inform you going forward.”
The album features elements of house, disco, soul and R&B, as well as clips from more than 11 hours worth of archive recordings involving her family. She pays tribute to her grandmother on one track, 'When She Dance'.
