Loraine James is releasing a new album, titled 'Gentle Confrontation', on Hyperdub this September. Watch the video for lead single '2003', directed by Ivor Alice, below.
The 16-track LP will be the London artist's third for Kode9's label, following 2021's 'Reflection' and her breakthrough 2019 album, 'For You And I'. It's inspired by teen Loraine's emo and math rock favourites, like DNTEL, Lusine and Telefon Tel Aviv, and crosses themes of family relationships and self-compassion, according to the press release. Out 22nd September, the album features a number of contributors, including Eden Samara, Marina Herlop, George Riley, Contour, Corey Mastrangelo, RiTchie and keiyaA.
Between her second and third LPs for Hyperdub, James released two albums in 2022: the Whatever The Weather project's debut LP on Ghostly International and the Julius Eastman-inspired 'Building Something Beautiful For Me' on Phantom Limb. She shared a number of collaborations the '053' EP with TSVI and 'Fuck It!' single with TAAHLIAH. In September, she contributed an edit to the Tirzah remix album, 'Highgrade'.
This past April, Smalltown Supersound included James' remix of Kelly Lee Owens' 'Wake Up' on its anthology remix compilation.
In December 2022, Eoin Murray met up with James to discuss Eastman, performing with the London Contemporary Orchestra, math rock, emotions and instincts and more — revisit the interview here.
